Humko Oil Products, a Division of ACH Food Companies Inc., Memphis, TN, has launched a new line of GMO-Free shortenings made with sunflower oil. "Sunflower oil is the perfect base oil for developing GMO-Free shortenings because the entire crop is still produced from non-genetically modified sunflower hybrids", said Dr. Roy Johnston, Director of Business Development and Technology for Humko Oil Products. "The farmers in the Northern Plains and Southern High Plains have an advantage with their sunflower crop in that its non-GMO status gives it more flexibility for meeting the growing needs of food manufacturers for GMO-Free ingredients," Johnston continued. Humko Oil Products is the first edible oil manufacturer in the U.S. to offer GMO-Free shortenings made with sunflower oil. From bakery applications to spray coating oils for cereals and dried fruit, and to shortening for microwave popcorn, Humko's line of GMO-Free shortenings can be used in a broad range of applications. Johnston said, "Humko is excited about the market potential for this new product line and the opportunity it holds for the sunflower farmer."

ACH Food Companies, Inc. holds two United States patents related to high oleic sunflower seed and oil as a result of its transaction in 1996 regarding the high oleic sunflower business of the SVO Specialty Products, Inc. and Lubrizol Corporation. Humko is excited about the significant growth foreseen for this product and the opportunity it offers the sunflower grower to have a value added, contract crop in his production portfolio. Humko has retained Kings Inc. to do the acreage contracting for all high oleic sunflower production. Trisun¬ is the brand under which Humko Oil markets its high oleic sunflower oil to U.S. food and industrial products manufacturers.
